Grant Budge

CEO & Co-Founder at PeroCycle

Grant Budge is the CEO and Co-Founder of PeroCycle, an industrial decarbonization company focused on heavy industry, especially steel. PeroCycle builds an on-site technology that integrates into existing industrial production and creates a closed carbon loop, with the goal of reducing emissions from steelmaking and other high-heat, hard-to-abate sectors without depending on a carbon price or a green premium. On The Grove, Earth Onward’s climate-tech interview podcast hosted by Blake Newcomer, Budge explained why he believes clean steel can be produced without adding 20 to 35 percent to the cost of the material, and why decarbonization tools must fit the economic and operational realities of slow-moving industrial systems.

Budge’s perspective comes from a career that began in engineering roles across mining and steel. In 2006, he led development of a utility-scale power project in the UK that included carbon capture and storage, taking it from pre-feasibility through to an information memorandum for an IPO. That experience helped move his career toward energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and company building. He later helped create a joint venture around pre-combustion carbon capture technology, secured government funding for engineering work, and exited in 2019. He has also been an investor and non-executive director in a UK energy startup using blockchain for smaller-volume, peer-to-peer electricity trading.
